Some of our favorite yarns such as Red Heart Worsted Weight Yarn can start off a bit scratchy and whether you want to soften the yarn before you crochet or knit with it or wait until your project is complete there are several online tutorials available on how to do this. But before you begin to wash your yarn in any type of detergent or shampoo be sure to read the instructions on the label for washing and care. It also may be a good idea to test a piece of your yarn with the laundry soap or shampoo you are using to wash it in.
First thing to do if you are washing a skein of yarn is to remove all of the labels.
Next loosen up the skein a bit and place in a lingerie bag or a pillow case (preferably a white one).
Wash the yarn in cold water with like colors.
Dry on low to medium heat.
Remove promptly and your yarn should be soft and fluffy.
You can also wash by hand if you prefer before or after you crochet or knit a project.

After a project is finished you can easily wash an completed project by soaking it in cold water for about 20 minutes and use a gentle shampoo to hand wash it in and rinse carefully, next use a conditioner on the item and let soak for about 10 minutes and rinse and let dry.
There are several ways to soften yarn if you search online use methods such as vinegar and fabric softener, but the most popular methods seem to be hand washing using a mild shampoo and conditioner. Learn more by watching the videos below...
