Free Knitting Pattern Tank Top to Knit for Summer

Pattern is excerpted from 100 Knitting Projects
Sizes are for xs, Small, Large and Extra Large
Use Sport weight or Cotton Yarn


Sizes:
Small    Medium    Large
Body Bust
Measurements              34”           37”       40” 
Garment Bust
Measurements              38”        42 1/2”   45 3/4”

Note: Instructions are written for size X-small with changes for sizes Small, Medium and Large in parentheses. 

Materials:
DK or sport weight  cotton yarn,
3 1/2 (3 1/2,  5 1/4, 5 1/4) ozs  pink

Super 10 Cotton, #3486 Tiger Lily
14” Size 6 (4mm) straight  knitting needles (or size required for gauge)
16” Size 6 (4mm) circular knitting needle
16” Size 5 (3.5mm) circular knitting needle

Gauge:
22 sts and  28 rows = 4”with larger needles in 
    stockinette stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) 

Pattern:  
Row 1 (right side): Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: Knit.

Repeat these 6 rows for pattern.
Stitch Guide:
Slip, slip, knit decrease (SSK):
 Sl 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time to right-hand needle. Insert tip of left-hand needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together: SSK made. 

Increase (inc): knit in front and in back of same  st.

Instructions:
Back:
With straight needles,  starting at bottom of garment CO104 (116, 126) sts.
Rows 1 through 3: Knit.
Work even in patt for 3”ending by working a wrong-side row.

Back Decreases:
Row 1: K2 tog, work to last 2 sts, SSK: 102 (114, 124) sts.
Rows 2 through 4: Work even in patt . 
Row 5: Rep Row 1: 100 (112, 122)  sts.
Rep Rows 1 through 5 until there are 92 (104, 114)  sts.
Work 12 rows even in patt, ending by working a wrong-side row.

Back Increases:
Row 1 (right side): Inc in first st, work in patt to last st, inc in last st: 94 (106, 116) sts.
Rows 2 through 6: Work even  in patt.
Row 7: Rep Row 1: 96 (108, 118)  sts.

Rep Rows 2 through 7 until  there are 104 (116, 126) sts.

Work even in patt until piece measures  13” (13”, 13”) from CO edge.

Armhole Shaping:
Row 1: BO 8 (9, 10) sts at beg of row; work even in patt across: 96 (107, 116) sts.
Row 2: Rep Row 1: 88 (98, 106) sts.
Rows 3 through 5: Work even in patt.
Row 6: K2 tog, work in patt to last two sts, SSK: 86 (96, 104) sts.

Rep Rows 3 through 6 until there are 76 (78, 94) sts.

Next Row: Rep Row 6: 74 (76, 92) sts.
Next Row: Work even in patt.

Rep last two rows until there are 38 (44, 44) sts. BO.

Front: 
Work same as  back until piece measures 19”(19 3/4”, 19 3/4”).

Neck Shaping: 
Work in patt to center 24 (26, 24) sts.  Attach another
ball of yarn. BO center 24 (26, 24) sts, and
work across row. Working both sides at once and
continuing armhole decs  as for back, dec 1 st at
each neck edge, every other row 7(9, 10) times.

Continue  shaping as for back until all sts are decreased.  

Finishing:
Sew side seams and  shoulders at neck edge.

Turtleneck:
With  smaller  circular needle  and right side facing, pick up 23 (25, 27) sts from right neck edge, pick up 24 (26, 24) front neck sts, pick up 23 (25, 27) sts from left neck edge, pick up 38
(44, 44) back neck sts, place marker, join: 108 (120, 122 sts).

Note: When working in the round, knit 4 rows for stock st, knit 1 row, purl 1 row for garter stitch.

Work in patt  for 2". 
Change to larger  circular needles and work in patt  for 3".  BO loosely.
