Free Vintage Halter Knitting Pattern


The pattern below if a vintage pattern so make any changes accordingly.  The pattern is in public domain so be sure not to sell or reproduce it without seeking permission first.
As a vintage pattern, please note that yarns and needle sizes may be different from what's currently available, and finished garment sizes are smaller. A vintage Medium is a modern Small. Check your gauge, read the pattern before starting, and adjust accordingly.
Medium size
MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Wool Floss (2 ply), 5 balls (1 oz balls) of Cherry Red... Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2... Bone Crochet Hook No. 1... 2 large and 2 small matching buttons.
GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.
RIGHT POINT: Starting at lower edge of Right Point, cast on 3 sts. 1st row: Inc 1 st in first st, p 1, k 1. 2nd row: Inc 1 st in first st - place a marker for front edge - k 1, p1, inc 1 st in last st - place a marker for side edge. 3rd row: Inc 1 st in first st, k2, p1, k2. 4th row: K across, increasing 1 st in the 1st and last sts (right side of work). 5th row: Inc 1 st in first st, k1, (p1, k2) twice, p1. 6th row: Inc 1 st in first st, (p2, k1) twice, p2, inc 1 st in last st. 7th row: Inc 1 st in first st, (p1, k2) 3 times, p1, k1. 8th row: Same as 4th row. 9th row: Inc 1 st in first st, (k2, p1) 4 times, k2. 10th row: Inc 1 st in first st, p1, (k1, p2) 4 times, k1, inc 1 st in last st. 11th row: Inc 1 st in first st, k1, (p1, k2) 5 times, p1. 12th row: Same as 4th row.
The last 4 rows constitute the pattern. Keeping continuity of pattern throughout all shaping, inc 1 st at side edge each row and 1 st at front edge every other row until there are 33 sts on needle. Break yarn and place sts onto a stitch holder.
LEFT POINT: Same as Right Point, reversing shaping. Do not break off.
BODY: Next row: Inc 1 st in first st (side edge), work in pattern across, cast on 1 st (center front), work in pattern across sts of Right Point, increasing 1 st in last st (69 sts).
Cast on 3 sts at end of each row until there are 183 sts on needle. Cast on 21 sts at end of next 2 rows. Inc 1 st at both ends of every other row until there are 249 sts on needle. (Work should be at right back edge.) On the next row make a buttonhole as follows: Work 2 sts, bind off 6 sts, work in pattern across row. On next row, work in pattern, casting on 6 sts to replace those bound off. Work straight in pattern for 2 1/2 inches, making another buttonhole 1 1/2 inches above 1st buttonhole.
Bind off 12 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 123 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 13 inches from center top of the 2 points, ending with the 3rd row.
Next row: Work in pattern across 61 sts, bind off next st (center st), work in pattern across remaining 61 sts. Working over last set of sts only, dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until 33 sts remain, ending at inner edge.
Following row: (K 2 tog) 16 times, k1, work straight in pattern over the remaining sts until piece measures 5 inches.
Next row: Work 2 sts, bind off 4 sts, work 4 sts, bind off 4 sts, work remaining 2 sts. On the following row, cast on 4 sts over each of the 4 sts bound off. Work straight in pattern for 1/2 inch. Bind off.
Attach yarn at inner edge on opposite side and work to correspond, omitting buttonholes.
Make a row of sc all around edges, making 3 sc in each corner and holding sides of vest in to fit tightly. Press through a damp cloth. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes.
