Knit a Large Cable Scarf Pattern

Learn How to Make Your Own Super Large Wool Accessory

A luxurious scarf (made here from pure Aran wool) that will be the envy of all your friends. The chunky cable makes it extra thick and warm, and with the super-long length you’ll never be cold. You could also try this pattern with finer yarn for a skinnier and lighter-weight version of this scarf.
Size
Approximately 82 1⁄2in (209.5cm) long and 8 1⁄4in (21cm) wide.
Yarn suggestion 
Ten 3 1⁄2oz (100g) balls—approximately 1859yds (1700m)—of worsted-weight yarn, such as Rowan Pure Wool Aran
Needles
Pair of US 11 (8.0mm) knitting needles

Other materials
Cable needle
Knitter’s sewing needle
Gauge (tension)
18 stitches and 16 rows to 4in (10cm) square over patt using US 11 (8.0mm) needles and 2 strands of yarn held together
Abbreviations
C6F = slip next 3 sts onto cable needle and leave at front of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
C6B = slip next 3 sts onto cable needle and leave at back of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle.

Pattern
SCARF
Using 2 strands of yarn held together, cast on 38 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: K1, [C6F] six times, k1.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: Purl.
Row 7: K4, [C6B] five times, k4.
Row 8: Purl.
These 8 rows form patt.
Cont in patt until scarf measures approx 821⁄2in (209.5cm), ending after patt row 4 or 8.
Bind (cast) off.
FINISHING
Do NOT press. Weave in yarn ends.
For fringe, cut 231⁄2in (60cm) lengths of yarn.
Knot pairs of these lengths through every st along cast-on and bound-off (cast-off) edge.
